How to Print Coloring Pages at Home
Printing a coloring page sounds simple — until it comes out cropped, blurry or the wrong size. If you've downloaded a printable and want it to look its best on paper, here's a quick, no-fuss guide to printing coloring pages at home.
1. Choose the Right Paper
Plain printer paper works fine for pencils, but if you're using markers or want a sturdier finished page, reach for cardstock (around 65–110 lb) instead. It resists bleed-through, holds up to layering and blending, and feels nicer to color on and display afterward.
2. Pick the Correct Page Size (A4 vs US Letter)
Most printables come in both A4 and US Letter, and they aren't interchangeable — printing an A4 file on US Letter paper (or vice versa) can crop part of the design. Check which size your printer/paper is set to, and choose the matching version of the file if one is offered.
3. Adjust Your Printer Settings
- ♥Print at "Actual Size" or 100%, not "Fit to Page" — scaling can shift or crop the artwork
- ♥Choose your printer's best/highest quality mode for cleaner lines
- ♥Keep color mode on (even for black-and-white line art, true black prints crisper than grayscale on most printers)
- ♥Turn off duplex/double-sided printing unless you specifically want pages back-to-back
4. Do a Test Print First
Before printing an entire coloring book, print just one page and check that nothing's cropped, the lines are sharp, and the size looks right against a ruler. It only takes a minute and saves paper (and ink) if a setting needs adjusting.
5. Think About Ink Type If You're Using Markers
Inkjet-printed lines can occasionally smear under alcohol-based markers, while laser-printed pages tend to hold up better. If you only have an inkjet printer, let the print sit for a few minutes before coloring, and consider slipping a spare sheet behind the page either way — markers bleed through most papers regardless of how they were printed.
